"How the intestine gives us indications about Parkinson's disease"
My research project in 2 min ...

The digestive tract is reached during Parkinson's disease. Indeed, the characteristic lesions of the disease (Lewy bodies) are present in the neurons of the digestive tract in almost all Parkinson's patients. In contrast to brain neurons (Figure), digestive neurons are easily accessible in the patient's lifetime and we have shown in the laboratory that it is possible to detect Lewy bodies from routine digestive biopsies. These results open perspectives for developing markers of diagnosis and evolution of the disease. Our current projects aim to optimize the use of digestive biopsies to assist in the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases (progressive supranuclear palsy, Alzheimer's disease).

Présentation du projet

Figure : A digestive biopsy is used to analyze enteric neurons (NF220 neurofilament labeling), enteric glial cells (EGCs, S100-b labeling) and intestinal epithelial cells (ZO-1 labeling). MP for myenteric plexus, SMP for submucosal plexus.
